Recent Undergraduate Scholarship Awards

  • Spring 2023: Jasmine Al Rasheed, a graduating senior of Irwin, Pennsylvania, earned a Bachelor of Philosophy in international and area studies with a double major in sociology and minors in German and statistics. She is the vice president of Pitt’s Multiracial Student Association and social chair of the Muslim Student Association. Jasmine received a Fulbright travel to Morocco to research public health in relation to gender and religion.

  • Spring 2023: Regis Curtis, a graduating senior of of Bulger, Pennsylvania, is pursuing a Bachelor of Philosophy in international and area studies, focusing on West European Studies. Curtis is also majoring in German and French with a minor in gender, sexuality and women’s studies and a certificate in Central European Studies. They received a Fulbright to serve as an English teaching assistant in Germany while continuing research on contemporary HIV/AIDS cinema, representation, monogamy and safer sex regimes.

  • Spring 2023: Dayon Ketchens, a graduating senior of of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, earned bachelor’s degrees in linguistics and German language and cultural studies. Dayon received a Fulbright to serve as an English teaching assistant in Germany, where he will explore his interest in second-language acquisition, specifically psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics.

  • Spring 2023: Madelyn McCollough, a graduating senior of of Woodbridge, Connecticut, is a student in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences pursuing a German language and cultural studies major with a sociology minor and a certificate in West European Studies. She received a Fulbright to serve as an English teaching assistant in Germany.

  • Spring 2022: Bobby Blankemeyer, a graduating senior at Pitt, majoring in German and Communication/Rhetoric with a minor in education, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in Germany to serve as an English Teaching Assistant. He will spend a year working in a German school, serving as both a teacher and a cultural ambassador, answering students’ questions about the English language and American culture.

  • Spring 2022: Lauren Towner, a 2021 graduate with a BA in German with Honors, a BS in Ecology, and a Chemistry minor, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in Germany to serve as an English Teaching Assistant. She will spend a year working in a German school, serving as both a teacher and a cultural ambassador, answering students’ questions about the English language and American culture.

  • Spring 2022: Peter Martin, a graduating senior with a double major in Economics (BS) and Politic & Philosophy (BA) and a German certificate, was selected for the highly competitive Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX). The CBYX Program will send Peter to Germany to act as a cultural ambassador for the US as he spends the next year living, studying, working in Germany.

  • Spring 2021: Robert Blankemeyer, a Junior double major in German and Communication/Rhetoric from Richboro PA, was recently awarded a third place prize in the national essay contest sponsored by Delta Phi Alpha (the German Honors Society). He wrote a response to the question: “Was bedeutet soziale Gerechtigkeit?”  Congratulations, Bobby!  Thanks for representing Pitt so well.
     
  • Spring 2021: Brooke Riscoe, a graduating senior with a minor in German Studies and a Geology Major, won a DAAD scholarship for graduate study and training.
     
  • Summer 2020: Philosophy and Interdisciplinary German Studies Major, Max Nowalk, received a Brackenridge Fellowship to work with Professor Nandi Theunissen (Philosophy) on a project titled “Principles of Practical Reason in Kantian and Humean Constructivism.”
     
  • Spring 2020: Will Sumner (German Certificate) has won a prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) award.
     
  • Spring 2019: Graduating senior David Skrovanek was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the University of Applied Sciences in Dresden, Germany next fall.   • Spring 2019: German certificate student Emilia Fernandez received the Elizabeth Wylie-Ernst award for study abroad in Germany.
     
  • Spring 2019: Graduating seniors and German majors Eleanna Melcher and David Skrovanek received the Lore Foltin Award for Academic Excellence.
     
  • Spring 2019: German majors Allyson Dull and Madison Heebner received the Ruth Kuschmierz Travel Award for study abroad in Germany.
     
  • Spring 2018: German major Andrew Schlegel received the Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt Scholarship for study abroad in Germany.

  • Spring 2017: German minor Susie Pisarcik received the German Chancellor Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Susie's proposed research will analyze and parallel the integration systems in place for refugees allocated to rural and urban settings in Germany.   • Spring 2017: Graduating senior German major Tom Elvins was awarded a DAAD scholarship for further study and training. Next year, Tom will pursue a Master's Degree at the University of Leipzig. For more information about the DAAD, click here and here.
     
  • Spring 2017: German majors Nathaniel Henderson and Zebulon Browne received the Ruth Kuschmierz Travel Award for summer study abroad.  This summer, Nathaniel and Zebulon will study abroad in Augsburg, Germany.

  • Spring 2016: German majors Erin McMahon and Hana Mujkovic received the Ruth Kuschmierz scholarship for study abroad.  This summer, Erin will study in Salzburg, Austria through AIFS, and Hana will study at the Freie Universität Berlin.
     
  • Spring 2016: Graduating senior German majors Griffin Koch and Cory Zipprodt received the Lore Foltin Award for Academic Excellence.

  • Fall 2015: German major Tom Elvins received a Brackenridge Fellowship for the Spring 2016 semester.  Tom will undertake research with Dr. Ljiljana Duraskovic investigating the transposition of East Slavic linguistic features to a South Slavic document produced in 1219, called the Svetoga Save.   • Summer 2015: April 2015 certificate graduate Erica Stevens won third prize in the DAAD Essay Contest - Reunification in 250 Words or Less.  More than 2,000 people participated in the online vote for the winners of the contest.   • Summer 2015: German minor Nikita Constantini was awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International scholarship. Nikita will study Metropolitan Studies and Architecture in Berlin, Germany and conduct an individual research project concerning Dark Tourism in Nuremberg. To learn more about the Gilman Scholarship, click here.

  • Spring 2012: German major Valerie Alstadt received a DAAD university summer course grant for summer courses at a German university. German major Zachary Haddad was recognized as a DAAD Young Ambassador.  Young Ambassadors are students who have recently studied in Germany and return to promote study in Germany at their home universities.
